Braga - history, liveliness and Portuguese atmosphere

Braga is one of the oldest cities in Portugal and is about a 30-minute drive from Quinta Viva a Vida. The city is known for its historic center, cozy atmosphere and lively streetscape.

It is precisely this combination that makes Braga so pleasant for a day trip. You'll find old churches and squares, as well as cozy cafes, stores and local restaurants. The city feels lively without feeling massive or crowded.

City with a long history

Braga has played an important role in Portugal for centuries and you can see that everywhere in the city. Narrow streets, historic buildings and atmospheric squares alternate while daily life goes on as usual.

Thanks to the university, there is also a young and friendly atmosphere, making Braga feel not only historic, but also lively and relaxed.

Bom Jesus do Monte and other attractions

Just outside Braga is Bom Jesus do Monte, one of the most famous places in northern Portugal. Especially the impressive staircase, the view and the green surroundings make this a special place to visit.

There are also several churches, markets, shopping streets and small cafes in Braga where you can easily stroll around for a few hours without a fixed schedule.

Gluten-free food in Braga

Braga is also a fine city for those traveling gluten-free. More and more restaurants and cafes understand what gluten-free food entails and think well of safe options.

One place that we ourselves really like to recommend is Soul. Here the entire menu is gluten-free, which for people with celiac disease immediately gives a lot of peace of mind. No complicated consultations or doubts about cross-contamination, just relaxed ability to enjoy good food in a cozy atmosphere.

Because we have experience with celiac disease ourselves, we feel it is important to share tips for places where you can eat with confidence during your stay in northern Portugal.

Practical during your stay

From Quinta Viva a Vida you drive to Braga in about half an hour. This makes it easy to combine the city with nature, a quiet morning at the accommodation or just a relaxing dinner at the end of the day.

Braga is typically one of those places where you can still have a very nice day without full planning.
