Day trip to Porto - atmosphere, views and Portuguese friendliness

Porto is about an hour and a half drive from Quinta Viva a Vida and is perfect for a day trip during your stay in northern Portugal. The city feels vibrant and full of character, but is compact enough to explore leisurely at your own pace.

From colorful streets and viewpoints to the Douro River and cozy terraces, Porto is a city where you actually keep walking around naturally.

City on the Douro River

Porto's historic center lies along the Douro River and consists of narrow streets, old buildings and squares full of atmosphere. The Ribeira district in particular is known for its colorful houses, waterfront restaurants and views of the city's famous bridges.

Many places in Porto can be discovered on foot. Along the way you will automatically come across small cafes, viewpoints and quiet streets where you will want to linger for a while.

Good shoes and especially no hurry often make a visit to Porto most enjoyable.

Places that many people like to visit

There are plenty of places in Porto that are well known but still worth visiting on a day trip.

Livraria Lello

One of Portugal's best-known bookstores, with wooden stairs and an unusual interior. Early in the day it is often quieter here.

Torre dos Clérigos

Those who make the climb up will be rewarded with views of the city and the Douro River.

São Bento Station

Porto's train station is known for its large blue tile tableaus showing scenes from Portuguese history.

But honestly: you don't have to check off everything in Porto. Just walking around quietly, drinking coffee somewhere and experiencing the atmosphere along the way makes the city so much fun.

Food and gluten-free in Porto

Porto is not a completely gluten-free city, but there are an increasing number of places that take celiac disease and gluten-free food well into account.

You can also find some completely gluten-free bakeries and restaurants, which is nice during a day on the road. Since we have experience with celiac disease ourselves, we are happy to share our personal tips for safe and fine places to eat gluten-free in Porto.

And after a day in the city, it's nice to come back to a quiet, completely gluten-free place where you don't have to think about anything.
